PAROTID GLAND AND PAROTID TUMOURS

The major salivary glands are the parotid and submandibular glands. A tumour or growth can form in these glands and present as a lump in the face or neck.  Associate Professor Eng Ooi is a specialist ENT surgeon with significant experience in managing and removing benign and malignant tumours of the parotid gland. The facial nerve is closely related to the parotid gland and removal of parotid tumours requires experience and surgical skill to do it safely while preserving the facial nerve. A/Professor Ooi uses a facial nerve monitor during his parotidectomy surgery to help preserve the facial nerve.

Salivary gland infections and stones (calculi) can obstruct the gland leading to swelling and pain. A/ Professor Ooi also offers sialoendoscopy, a surgical technique using an endoscope, to remove the stone in selected cases without the patient having an external scar or having to remove the gland.
