Australian and New Zealand Head and Neck Cancer Society Annual Scientific Meeting in Melbourne Our surgeons Professor Eng Ooi and Dr Himani Joshi recently attended the ANZHNCS conference recently in Melbourne which was about Collaboration, Multi-Disciplinary Team Care, Clinical Trials, and the latest in cancer treatments using immunotherapy to improve outcomes for our patients.
Congratulations to our surgeon Eng Ooi on the recent award of Full Academic Status as Professor in the College of Medicine and Public Health, Flinders University. The award by the University takes into account multiple factors such as an individual's standing in the field, research papers, grants, teaching, leadership, community engagement in representing the University.

A/Professor Eng Ooi's research group at Flinders has recently published an article explaining how Pharyngeal high-resolution manometry with impedance (P-HRM-I) is an emerging, ambulatory swallow assessment for patients with pharyngeal dysphagia (throat swallowing difficulties). This investigation is only available in the Flinders public hospital. Old drugs, new cures? Pre-clinical validation of new chemotherapeutic options for treating head and neck cancer Dr Woods and her research team of PhD student Dr Lucy Huang, Associate Professor Eng Ooi and Associate Professor Michael Michael, will look at ‘repurposing drugs’ to investigate whether some existing drugs stop head and neck cancer cells from growing when they are combined with metformin – a drug used to treat Type 2 diabetes.
